Care for Your Jewellery

Ollie Jessop in Jessop shop windowGems and Precious metals require a considerable amount of care, even though they are millions of years old. In order for you to keep your jewellery looking at its best, here is a simple guide to keeping that sparkle and maintaining your jewellery.

Don’t wear fine jewellery when doing housework or gardening.

Don’t place items of jewellery on top of one another as this can scratch metals and gemstones. This includes overcrowding jewellery boxes!

Do not use toothpaste as its abrasives can damage softer gems and metals. Soaking in warm soapy water for 10 minutes can safely clean most fine jewellery. Use a soft toothbrush on harder gems to remove dirt from around the claws.

Jewellery on Display at JessopDo keep gemstone-studded jewellery, pearls, gold and silver pieces separated from each other to prevent scratching. Store fine jewellery in soft pouches, soft cloths wraps or plastic “zip lock” bags to protect them.

Do have your jewellery checked by a professional every 3 to 6 months to avoid lots of repair work or the loss of any gemstones.

Do come into our store and have your Jessop Jewellers purchased jewellery cleaned and check for free. (Weekdays only).

If in doubt about what to clean your jewellery with please feel free to contact us; be aware an inappropriate cleaner may actually damage your settings or gemstones.

Do not clean pearls with water or any liquid, due to colour change. Use a specific pearl cleaner.
